New Year Resolution

Dear Sadhus,

Have you made your New Year resolutions yet?

In Bhagavad-gita 2.41 Lord Krsna describes different types of resolutions.

“Those who are on this path are resolute in purpose, and their aim is one. O beloved child of the Kurus, the intelligence of those who are irresolute is many branched.”

The meaning of this statement is that on the material platform our desires are unlimited; new car, more money, nice clothes, better food, etc. In Sanskrit this is called 'bahu-sakha,' many branched.

Later in Bhagavad-gita Chapter 15, the Lord compares this entire material world to a large banyan tree, which as everyone knows is a perfect example of a many-branched tree.

“The branches of this tree extend downward and upward, nourished by the three modes of material nature. The twigs are the objects of the senses. This tree also has roots going down, and these are bound to the fruitive actions of human society.” (Bg 15.2)

Entangled in this miserable mess, always searching for illusory happiness, the living entity become lost – wrongly thinking the tree is a source of happiness.

The process of Krsna consciousness, however, gradually transforms one's heart from being entangled in the web of this material banyan tree to flow freely in a loving relationship with Lord Krsna. This process takes time – and resolute determination.

“But with determination one must cut down this tree with the weapon of detachment. So doing, one must seek that place from which having once gone, one never returns, and there surrender unto that Supreme Personality of Godhead from who everything has begun and in whom everything is abiding since time immemorial.” (Bg 15.3-4)

To help everyone develop spiritual strength and determination along this daunting trek – and to teach everyone how to overcome distractions of innumerable material allurements – we invite you to seriously study the Bhagavad-gita with us from your own home on your own schedule via our eCourse at Krishna.com.

Our next semester begins January 11th, so enroll now!

Such a New Year resolution to study Bhagavad-gita is surely pleasing to Lord Krsna.

"Steadiness means that one should be very determined to make progress in spiritual life. Without such determination, one cannot make tangible progress." (Bg 13.8-12 purport)
